Top 10 Things to Do in Byron Bay with Kids

Byron Bay might be famous for its surf and yoga scene, but it’s also brilliant with kids in tow. From beaches that double as playgrounds to wildlife encounters and the all-important ice cream stops, there’s plenty here to keep little legs moving (and parents happy).

Here’s our go-to list of family-friendly Byron adventures.

1. Hit the Beach: You really can’t go past the beaches here. Main Beach is patrolled and can have gentle waves for splashing, so it’s a stress-free option if you’re watching more than one set of little feet. Wategos is great for rockpool hunting and paddling in the shallows, while The Pass is where older kids can try their first surf lesson. Bring buckets, spades, and snacks, and you’ve got hours of fun without much effort.

2. Cape Byron Lighthouse Walk: Yes, it’s a climb with small legs (or a pram if you go up the road way), but it’s one of those walks that stays with you. The track winds along the coastline with sweeping views of the ocean. Along the way you might spot turtles, dolphins, or in spring, humpback whales cruising with their calves. Pack snacks, take it slow, and make a morning of it.

3. The Farm Byron Bay: Pat the animals, wander through veggie patches, and let the kids loose on the playground. In the school holidays, there are hands-on kids’ workshops, and there’s always good coffee and something sweet for parents.

4. Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens: Think giant crystals, rainforest walks, and a playground for when the novelty of a two-metre amethyst wears off. A mix of magic and mud-covered sneakers.

5. Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary: Hand-feed wallabies, watch the koalas nap, and meet the emus up close. It’s the old Macadamia Castle, refreshed — still perfect for a half-day adventure.

6. Bike the Northern Rivers Rail Trail: A family favourite. The trail runs through shady tunnels, old rail bridges, and rolling countryside that feels like a real adventure without being too tough. Hire standard bikes or e-bikes (trailers are available for younger kids), pick a section, and make a day of it. Stop for juice, ice cream, or even a pub lunch at the end

7. Explore Byron Farmers Market: Thursday mornings are for filling a tote bag with fresh produce and pastries while the kids run between stalls sampling fruit. There’s always music, a buzz in the air, and something delicious to take home.

8. Circus Arts Byron Bay: A rainy-day hero. Indoors you’ll find trapeze swings, climbing walls, and a huge play space. Younger kids burn off energy, older kids can test their balance, and parents get to enjoy a quiet coffee on the sidelines.

9. Jarjumirr Skate Park: Right in town, just back from Main Beach, the skatepark is always buzzing. Even if your kids just roll around the edges, it’s a fun spot to hang out.

10. Treat Time: Gelato at Bella Rosa or an acai bowl from Top Shop, both classics, both guaranteed crowd-pleasers. Because no holiday day is complete without something sweet.
