Accommodation near Bangalow, in the Byron hinterland
Six private villas on our family farm at Talofa, 7 minutes from Bangalow and 10 from Byron Bay. Each villa has two bedrooms, a full kitchen and its own deck looking out over the hills.
Staying near Bangalow
Bangalow is our town. My family has owned this property for 25 years and Bangalow is where we do most of our week.
Staying at Carinya means you get the village as your local, with Byron's beaches an easy 10 minute drive the other way. Most mornings we're at the beach or on the lighthouse walk before breakfast, then back in the hinterland by lunch.
Your own villa, not a room
Each of the six villas is fully self-contained, with two bedrooms, a queen in one and twin singles in the other, so there's room for four. You get a full kitchen and open plan living, a private deck looking out over the hills, an outdoor shower and your own laundry. Air conditioning and ceiling fans keep things comfortable through summer.
The villas are spread across the property, so you have your own space and your own view. If you're travelling with family or friends you can book two villas together, or the whole property.
Where we'd send you in Bangalow
Eat and Drink
Woods, just off the main street, is where we end up most Saturdays. Order the savoury crumpets. Mangosteen behind the Corner Store does fresh sushi and daily salad specials on weekdays, You Beauty is a clever modern take on a pub, and Ciao Mate is the one for wood-fired pizza and natural wine at the end of a day.
Shopping
The main street is made for wandering. Rowie for easy local linen, Our Corner Store for homewares and pantry things, Abracadabra for a proper lucky dip, and the CWA shop for jams and slices made by people who have been doing it for generations.
Markets
The farmers market runs every Saturday morning at Piccabeen Park, and it's the best way to stock the villa kitchen for the week. On the fourth Sunday of the month the Showground fills up with the Bangalow Market, live music under the camphor laurels and plenty of local makers.
Village Life
Bangalow is a Federation-era country town and the shopfronts, verandas and old corner pub are worth an hour on their own. The Bangalow Show is the big one each year, and you'll find our old tractors on display. Federal, Newrybar and Eltham are all a short drive further into the hills.
There's more in our local's guide to Bangalow, with all our favourites and where to find them.
Getting to Carinya
We're at 520 Bangalow Road, Talofa, on the road between Bangalow and Byron Bay.
• Bangalow: 7 minutes
• Byron Bay: 10 minutes
• Newrybar and Brooklet: around 10 minutes
• Ballina Byron Gateway Airport: 25 minutes
• Gold Coast Airport: 50 minutes
You'll want a car. The hinterland is best explored by driving, and the villages, beaches and farm gates are all spread out.
A working farm in the hinterland
Carinya is a 100 acre working cattle farm with 30 acres of regenerating native bushland. The whole property runs fully off-grid on solar with battery storage and rainwater, which is why we ask guests to be a little mindful with energy.
You'll share the place with wallabies and a lot of birdlife. Mornings on the deck are quiet apart from the cattle and the whipbirds.
