A Local’s Guide to Bangalow: Where to Eat, Shop, and Explore
Just five minutes from Carinya Byron Bay, the historic village of Bangalow is one of those places that instantly feels special. With its Federation shopfronts, leafy streets, and food and fashion that punch well above its size, it’s the kind of town you’ll wander into for a coffee and find yourself still there hours later.
Here’s our take on what to eat, where to browse, and how to soak it all in.
Where to Eat in Bangalow
For a little town, Bangalow really pulls its weight when it comes to food. You could plan a whole day just around eating here (and we often do). A few favourites:
WOODS – Tucked just off the main street, this café is pure hinterland cool. Order the savoury crumpets — they’ve got a bit of a cult following — and settle in with a great coffee.
MANGOSTEEN – Our go-to for lunch. You can eat in or take away, and the sushi is made fresh. The veggie tempura rolls and daily salad specials are always a hit.
Manu’s Bangalow Alimentari – An old-school deli with serious charm. Prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, house-made focaccia — it’s a slice of Italy in the middle of the Northern Rivers.
You Beauty – If you’re after a late lunch or early dinner, this modern take on a pub always has a good buzz. The food is clever without being fussy, and it’s a tough spot to walk past when there’s a free table.
Ciao Mate – End your day with wood-fired pizza and natural wines at this cosy Italian. It’s intimate, unfussy, and exactly the kind of place you’ll want to linger over one more glass.
Where to Shop in Bangalow
Bangalow’s main street is made for wandering. You’ll find a mix of fashion, homewares, and those little one-off treasures that somehow end up in your bag.
Rowie – Local linen done right. Easy, timeless pieces that feel just as good at the beach as they do at dinner.
CWA Bangalow – The Country Women’s Association has been part of the town for generations. Pop into their shop for homemade jams, slices, and the kind of crafts you don’t find anywhere else. It feels a bit like stepping back in time (in the best way).
Abracadabra – An old-school Bangalow stop that locals have been popping into for decades. It’s a bit of a lucky dip — from quirky gifts to knick-knacks you didn’t know you needed.
Our Corner Store – A carefully curated mix of homewares, pantry staples, and everyday things that are just a little more beautiful than they need to be.
What to Explore in Bangalow
Bangalow has a way of slowing you down. Between the weekly farmers market and the monthly Bangalow Markets, there’s always something happening under the big camphor laurel trees. Saturday mornings are for filling your basket with fresh bread, flowers, and produce from local growers, while the 4th Sunday of the month brings one of the best-loved markets in the region — live music drifting through the stalls, kids running around with ice creams, and plenty of finds from local makers.
Even outside of market days, Bangalow’s streets are worth a wander. The Federation-era shopfronts, the old pub on the corner, and the shady verandas all add to its small-town charm. And if you feel like stretching your legs further, you’re just a short drive from hinterland favourites like Federal, Newrybar, and Eltham — each with its own little surprise
