Byron Bay with Kids: A Holiday Guide
Byron Bay is one of those rare places that makes family holidays feel easy. Days flow between the beach, ice cream stops, and adventures out in the hinterland. If you’re staying with us at Carinya over the school holidays, here’s a guide to help shape your trip — full of activities, food stops, and a few rainy-day back-ups to keep everyone happy.
Beaches the Whole Family Will Love
Clarkes Beach – Gentle waves, lifesavers on duty in the holidays, and parking nearby. It’s one of the easiest spots to spend a whole day without having to trek too far with beach bags and buckets.
Main Beach – A classic choice with a playground and picnic tables right next to the sand. Perfect for a quick swim or sunset dinner on the grass.
The Pass – A sheltered cove that’s ideal for beginner surfers or a quick snorkel. Parking is tight during peak times, so go early or later in the afternoon.
Brunswick River – A favourite for families who want calmer water. There’s plenty of space for paddleboarding, and shady trees make it easy to set up for the day.
Adventures That Stick
The Farm – A must for younger kids. There are chickens running around, cows to watch, and a playground that seems to keep kids busy for hours. Parents can grab takeaway coffee and food from Three Blue Ducks and set up outside.
Pegasus Park – Just 10 minutes from Carinya, pony rides through the hinterland make for a special memory.
Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens – Kids are always drawn to the giant crystals and hidden nooks of the gardens. It’s an easy half-day trip that works for all ages.
Byron Wildlife Sanctuary – Koalas, kangaroos, and hands-on programs during the school holidays. A great mix of learning and fun.
Dolphin Kayak Tour – Older kids love the adventure of paddling out with a guide. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot dolphins swimming right alongside you.
Rainy Day Back-Ups
When the skies open up, Byron still has plenty to offer:
Circus Arts – Indoors, energetic, and a total win for kids who love to try new things. There’s trapeze, juggling, and an indoor play area for smaller ones.
Palace Cinemas – With nine screens, you’ll always find something family-friendly showing.
Ballina Tenpin Bowl – Tenpin bowling, mini golf, and glow-in-the-dark sessions. The bumpers and lightweight balls mean even little kids can join in.
Family Walks & Rides
Cape Byron Lighthouse – Drive up or walk from The Pass/Wategos (though be ready for stairs). The view is worth it, and kids often spot dolphins or whales if you’re here in the right season.
Northern Rivers Rail Trail – Flat tracks through beautiful countryside. You can hire kid bikes or seats and take it at your own pace. Stop at Burringbar for snacks or a cheeky wine tasting if the kids are distracted with a treat.
Waterfalls – Killen Falls is a quick drive with a swimming hole at the bottom. Minyon Falls has short walks for a big payoff at the lookout.
Kid-Friendly Eats
Eating out with kids is easier when the venue is set up for them too:
WOODS, Bangalow – Highchairs, space for kids to roam, and savoury crumpets that are always a hit.
North Byron Hotel – Huge garden with a play area, plus live bands on weekends.
Old Maids, Brunswick Heads – Burgers and smoothies after a beach swim — a reliable favourite.
Beach Byron Bay Kiosk – Coffee and pastries for parents, a sandpit and toy boat for kids.
Bay Pizza Lab – Byron’s best pizza, perfect for an easy night back at your villa.
A Few Extra Tips
Markets – Farmers markets in Byron and Bangalow are great fun for kids, with food stalls and live music.
Gear Hire – Need a portacot, pram, or beach gear? East Coast Baby Hire will deliver straight to your villa before you arrive.
Farm Tour at Carinya – If the weather’s good, we’re happy to show kids around the property to meet the cows and spot wallabies.
The beauty of Byron with kids is that you don’t have to overplan. Leave time for sandcastles, early dinners, and barefoot wanders. It’s the kind of holiday that feels simple, in the best possible way.
