Exploring the Byron Hinterland: The Best Towns, Markets and Walks
Byron Bay gets all the headlines, but those who wander inland know the real secret: the hinterland. Just a short drive from the beach, you’ll find rolling green hills, tiny towns full of character, and some of the region’s best food and wine.
It’s slower, quieter, and just the kind of escape you dream about when life feels busy. Here’s what to explore.
Where to Eat in the Hinterland
Some of the region’s best cafés, bakeries and pubs sit quietly in the hills, all worth planning your day around.
Prairie Coffeehouse, Brooklet - a sweet roadside cart serving organic coffee, seasonal elixirs and homemade treats. A few outdoor seats make it a lovely spot to pause mid-drive.
Home, Alstonville - a warm, small-town café serving great food, fresh produce and friendly service. Worth the drive if you’re exploring towards the south.
Moonshine Coffee, Federal - small-batch coffee roasted on-site in Federal. Strong, simple, the perfect start to any hinterland morning.
Doma Cafe, Federal - where Japanese flavours meet country café charm, sushi rolls and tempura on picnic tables out the front.
Eltham Hotel, Eltham - for the true hinterland pub experience, known for its live music, buzzing beer garden, and a menu that goes far beyond standard pub fare.
Coorabell Hall Pizza Night, Coorabell - A Monday-night favourite with woodfired pizzas by Pizza IT, BYO wine and sunset views over the hills. Casual, local and always a fun way to start the week.
Waterfalls, Walks & Nature Escapes
Swap the coastline for freshwater swims, shaded rainforest trails and slow nature walks. The hinterland is full of places to unwind in the quiet.
Minyon Falls, Nightcap National Park - a dramatic 100-metre waterfall surrounded by lush rainforest. Choose the short lookout track or the longer loop walk.
Killen Falls, Tintenbar - a shady swimming hole tucked under a rock overhang. Bring swimmers and towels for a refreshing dip.
Crystal Castle, Montecollum - a peaceful garden setting with rainforest paths, crystal walks and the giant stone labyrinth. A lovely slow morning activity.
Northern Rivers Rail Trail, Murwillumbah–Crabbes Creek - walk or cycle this scenic countryside trail. Hire an e-bike for an easier ride and stop in Burringbar for a coffee or wine tasting along the way.
Protestors Falls, Nightcap National Park - a short rainforest walk to a beautiful waterfall set in World Heritage–listed forest. Swimming isn’t allowed, but it’s a stunning place to wander.
Markets, Farmers Markets & Local Makers
From fresh local produce to handmade goods and weekend pop-ups, the hinterland has plenty of ways to meet the region’s growers and creatives.
Bangalow Farmers Market (Saturday mornings) - fresh bread, flowers, fruit and locally grown produce. A relaxed way to start the weekend.
Mullumbimby Farmers Market (Friday mornings) - a vibrant community market with live music, organic growers, great coffee and local makers.
Bangalow Markets (4th Sunday of each month) - long-running local favourite with food stalls, homewares, plants and handmade goods.
Newrybar Hall Pop-Ups, Newrybar - seasonal markets, small makers’ events and community pop-ups. Keep an eye out for dates during your stay.
A Simple Byron Hinterland Day Trip
A relaxed day exploring some of our favourite spots in the hills, good food, pretty drives and plenty of time to wander.
Morning
Start with breakfast at WOODS in Bangalow, then spend a little time wandering the village, homewares, boutiques and old Federation shopfronts.
If it’s a Saturday, don’t miss the Bangalow Farmers Market just outside town, fresh produce, flowers, bread and a great local atmosphere.
Late Morning
Make your way to Federal for an early lunch at Doma Café. Burgers, tempura and picnic tables under the trees, it’s always worth the detour.
Afternoon
Head to Crystal Castle for a slow wander through the gardens, rainforest paths and crystal walks. Don’t miss the sound bath or the aura readings if they’re running, both are lovely to experience once.
On your way back, stop in Newrybar to browse Old Pacific, and a few small homewares stores and local makers.
Evening
Pick up some fresh bread or simple supplies from Bangalow on your way home and head back to Carinya for a quiet dinner on the deck as the sun goes down.
Prefer something more restorative? Swap Crystal Castle for a spa treatment at Gaia in Brooklet and spend the afternoon unwinding in the hills.
