The Best Things to Do in Byron Bay with Kids This Autumn and Winter

Byron Bay in the cooler months is a different experience to the summer rush, quieter beaches, easier parking, and a pace that actually lets you enjoy it. For families especially, autumn and winter are two of the best times to visit.

The temperatures are mild, the light is beautiful, and the region has a full slate of things to do that genuinely suit kids of all ages. Whether you're planning an Easter break or a winter school holiday trip, there's plenty to keep everyone happy and a lot less queuing for coffee.

Here's what I'd put on the list….

Get Outside: Walks and Waterfalls

Cooler temperatures make this the best time of year to actually explore on foot. The Byron region has some beautiful spots that are far more enjoyable when it's not the height of summer.

  • Killen Falls (Tintenbar): Just 15 minutes from Carinya, this is an easy morning out. A short walk leads to a waterfall and swimming hole, manageable for younger kids and genuinely lovely. Go mid-week if you can for a quieter experience.

  • Cape Byron Lighthouse Walk (Byron Bay): Start from Clarkes Beach or Wategos and walk up to the lighthouse. One of those walks that earns its reputation, good dolphin-spotting from the headland and views back over the bay that are hard to beat. Suits older kids and confident walkers.

  • Minyon Falls (Nightcap National Park): A 40-minute drive from Carinya, but worth it. Short and longer trail options, with rainforest and waterfall views at the end. Check the National Parks site for any closures before you head out.

  • Northern Rivers Rail Trail (Murwillumbah – Crabbes Creek): If your kids are into bikes, the Tweed section runs 24km and bike hire (including e-bikes) is available at both ends. A solid half-day adventure for families with older kids.

Wildlife and Nature

One of the things that surprises people about this part of the world is how much wildlife you can encounter just going about your day.

  • At Carinya: We've spent 25 years restoring over 30 acres of rainforest on the property, and the wildlife has genuinely come back. Guests regularly spot echidnas, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, and blue-faced honeyeaters, often just from the deck. If you'd like a closer look at the farm, text me and we'll organise a tour when the weather allows.

  • Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary: Sanctuary Get up close with koalas, kangaroos, and other native animals. There are school holiday programs and wildlife encounter sessions running throughout the year. Adults $29.50, kids $19.

  • The Farm, Byron Bay: Chickens, cows, space to roam. The playground makes it easy for parents and the café does takeaway. Just go prepared for mud after rain.

  • Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens, Montecollum: The rainforest walk through the gardens is a lovely outing — calm, scenic, and a bit magical for younger kids. Entry fees apply.

Rainy Day Options

The odd wet day happens in autumn and winter. Worth having a few options up your sleeve.

  • Circus Arts Byron Bay: Trapeze, juggling, tightrope, and an indoor play area for younger kids. One of those places that genuinely surprises people. Great for a rainy morning or afternoon.

  • Palace Cinemas, Byron Bay: Nine screens, always something on. Easy and reliable.

  • Pegasus Park, Bangalow: Horse and pony rides through the hinterland, just 10 minutes from Carinya. A favourite with younger kids rain or shine.

  • Pottery Class at Muddy Clay Play: Hands-on sessions perfect for beginners, including kids. A fun change of pace.

Beaches Without the Crowds

The water is cooler in autumn and winter, but the beaches are noticeably nicer for it.

Clarkes Beach is a local family favourite, gentle waves and a relaxed feel. The Pass is sheltered and good for beginner surfers or snorkelling. Wategos is beautiful and a little quieter than Main Beach, though parking fills up quickly so arrive early.

If you want to get out of Byron altogether, Brunswick Heads is a 20-minute drive north and genuinely worth it. Calm river swimming at Pearson Beach, a lovely little main street, and a much slower pace than town.

Where to Eat with Kids

  • WOODS, Bangalow: Our go-to for a relaxed family breakfast. Tucked off the main street, kid-friendly, and the banana bread is always a hit.

  • North Byron Hotel: Big garden, outdoor play area, good food and live music. Plenty of space to spread out.

  • The Farm, Byron Bay: Kid-friendly menu, chickens wandering past, and outdoor tables. Casual and easy.

  • Mangosteen, Bangalow: Japanese-inspired café behind the Corner Store. Mini sushi rolls for kids, salad specials for the adults. Monday to Friday.

  • Roadhouse, Byron Bay: Café by day, pizza Thursday to Sunday evenings. Reliable and easy.

A Good Base for Exploring

Carinya is a small, family-run property in the Byron hinterland, 10 minutes from Byron Bay and 7 minutes from Bangalow. We have six private villas, each with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, private deck with BBQ, and room to actually spread out.

It works well for families. There's space for the kids, a real kitchen for when you don't want to eat out every night, and the property itself tends to be a highlight, wildlife on the doorstep and the kind of quiet that's hard to find closer to town.

Easter and winter school holidays tend to book out earlier than people expect in this area. If you're thinking about those dates, it's worth checking availability sooner rather than later.

You can book directly on our website and if you have questions before you arrive, you're always welcome to reach out directly.

We've also put together a dedicated Kids Guide with more activities, beaches, and family-friendly recommendations if you'd like more inspiration for your trip.
